Herding Fun -- A Day in the Sheep Pen (2000)

Last Sunday mom took us out to the sheep pen. Some people go to the beach for fun, but us puppies enjoy nothin better than chasing sheep, eating poop, and playing in the sheep trough! Our mom is the best!!

Ok guys, let's get these stragglers.

Cider giving 'eye' to a ewe.

My job is done, I'm outta here.

Ahhhhhh, nothing like a good foot soak.

Come on in the water's great - nice and green!

Look Mom, no hands.

I was very proud of Freckles, Cider, and Emma. This day was a trial to see how much instinct the pups had. All three showed a desire to herd, gather, turn, and bunch the sheep. Freckles preferred the gathering, whereas Cider showed great promise in turning and holding. Emma makes a great second string<G> None of the pups attempted to grip, and when a momma ewe would lower her head, they would back off and move to the rear, giving the sheep plenty of room to move. Though they show promise, I would call what they are doing now as "chasing" not "herding". They have the instinct, but lack knowledge - so does mom<G>
