During the recent past, an attempt has been made to pirate the miniature variety of Australian Shepherd. These pirates have established a web site stating that the "Royal Basque Shepherd" was formerly known as the miniature Australian Shepherd.
This is not true. There is no known breed by this name. True, there exists a Basque Shepherd in Spain (http://www.pyrenean-journal.com/berger.htm); however, those dogs have no genetic similarity to Australian Shepherds, mini or otherwise, as is readily seen by their entirely different appearance (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basque_Shepherd_Dog).
Why would someone attempt to steal or pirate someone else's good name? Like any thief, for easy profit of course. Apparently there are some unethical people who feel that it is legitimate to take another breed's name and absorb it for personal gain by setting up an alternate "registry" as a means of diverting funds. It is easy to create yourself with a fancy internet web site and add a seemingly sincere story to solicit sympathy and support. Do not be fooled!
The ONLY parent clubs for the Miniature Australian Shepherd and the North American Miniature Australian Shepherd were established over 13 years ago and have a respectable and secure registry. These two clubs are active and have no intention of changing their names.
Before you compromise your standards, talk to recognized breeders who have been around for longer than a year or two. Check their reputations and refuse to contribute to any club that attempts to pirate another. Beware of false clubs or ones that have been in existence for only a short time.
